Sustainable Travel International (“STI,” “we,” or “us) takes your privacy very seriously and cares about how your information is used and shared.  We are providing this Privacy Policy to explain our practices and the choices that you can make about the way your information is used by STI. 

The following Privacy Policy applies to information collected at  www.sustainabletravel.org, STI-owned or operated online services (jointly “Sites”). By visiting any of the Sites, you are accepting the practices described in this Privacy Policy. If you disagree with any of the terms herein, please immediately discontinue use of the Sites.

What information we collect

Personally-Identifiable Information

Personally-Identifiable Information (“Personal Information”) is information that identifies you as an individual or relates to an identifiable person. When you visit the Sites, STI and its service providers may collect personal information that you provide, such as your name, phone number, email address, mailing address, credit card number (if you use a credit card to make a donation), or organizational affiliation.

STI and its services providers only collect Personal Information when you submit such information to sign-up for our personalized services, for example when you sign up for the STI newsletter or donate. 

  • STI gathers information when you fill out forms on the Sites, including, for example, e-newsletter sign-up forms, inquiry forms, donation forms, registration forms, pledge forms, and surveys. 
  • When you engage with STI on social media, we may collect basic information on your profile, including your name and profile bio, the size of your following, your social sharing activity and your content preferences from social media platforms used by you.
  • We may also collect information about you from other public online and offline sources, such as public databases, social media, or information published in online or print media. 

If you submit any Personal Information relating to other people to us or to our service providers in connection with the Sites, you represent that you have the authority to do so and to permit us to use the information in accordance with this Privacy Policy.

Other Information

In addition, STI and its service providers use a variety of techniques to gather other information about your use of the Sites, including, among other things, your IP address, browser type, mobile device type, content visited while on the Sites, and the duration of your visit to the Sites. “Other Information” is any information that does not reveal your specific identity or does not directly relate to an individual.

We and our service providers may collect Other Information in a variety of ways, including:

  • We use “cookies” to help us monitor traffic and collect information about use of the Sites. Cookies are pieces of data placed on your device when you visit the Sites that help us recognize you when you come back to the Sites. STI uses the aggregated information collected from cookies to measure the number of visits to the Sites, the average time spent on the Sites, the identity and number of pages viewed, and to gather other traffic data and information that allows us to improve the Sites. We also use the information for security purposes, to facilitate navigation, and to personalize your experience while using the Sites. 
  • We also use Google Analytics, which uses cookies and other, similar technologies to collect information about Site use anonymously and reports website trends, without identifying individual visitors. How We Use Your Information

STI may use your Personal Information:

  • To send you information about STI news, programs, and opportunities if you signed up for the STI newsletter or other updates
  • To contact you about contests or sweepstakes you entered through our Sites and to invite you to participate in new contests and sweepstakes
  • To personalize your interactions with STI, such as to customize your web and email content based on your interests
  • To respond to inquiries and fulfill your requests, such as to send you information about a project or provide membership benefits.
  • To process donations, including membership and carbon offset contributions
  • To facilitate social sharing functionality
  • To send administrative information to you, such as information regarding the Sites and changes to our policies
  • For our internal purposes, such as data analysis, audits, fraud monitoring and prevention, developing new products and services, enhancing, improving or modifying the Sites, identifying usage trends, determining the effectiveness of our promotional campaigns, and operating and expanding our activities.


Some of the ways we use your Personal information require us to share information with third parties, so we can provide an effective user experience and comply with laws that apply to us:

  • Service Providers and Professional Advisors. Third party companies that we engage to process information on our behalf based on our instructions and in compliance with this Privacy Policy. Some information we acquire may be collected by third party providers on our behalf. For example, when you make a contribution via the forms the STI website, any Personal Information you submit is stored in the database of the third-party payment processor and/or customer relationship management tool. 
  • Fiscal Sponsor: In addition, STI partners with The Ocean Foundation as our 501(c)3 fiscal sponsor to accept certain charitable donations and send donors receipts on our behalf. We disclose whenever donations made through a web form on our Sites will be received by The Ocean Foundation.   • Law enforcement agencies or government agencies. We only share information if we believe that disclosure is reasonably necessary to comply with a law, regulation or legal request; to protect the safety, rights, or property of the public, any person, or STI; or to detect, prevent, or otherwise address fraud, security or technical issues.
  • Affiliates. If we were to engage in a merger, acquisition, bankruptcy, dissolution, reorganization, or similar transaction or proceeding that involves the transfer of the information described in this Policy, we would share your information with a party involved in such a process (for example, the successor organization of STI).

Your Choices

You can control the type of information collected through our Sites, for example by not accepting cookies from STI, by erasing all STI cookies from your browser, or by not providing Personal Information when prompted. In the event you choose not to share information, STI will be unable to respond to your request for STI information, enter you in any sweepstakes or contests, or process your donation.


Most browsers allow you to control cookies through their settings preferences. However, if you limit the ability of websites to set cookies, you may negatively impact your overall user experience, since it will no longer be customized to you. 

If you do not want to receive cookies, you can also change your browser settings on your computer or other device that you are using to access our Sites. If you visit our Sites without changing your browser settings, we will assume that you agree to receive all cookies on our Site.

Does STI Collect Information from Children?

STI does not knowingly collect personal information from anyone under the age of 13. The Sites are not directed at children under the age of 13. In the event that STI learns that it has collected personal information from a child under age 13 without parental consent, we will delete that information as quickly as possible. Your California Privacy Rights

It is our policy not to disclose any Personal Information we collect to third parties for direct marketing purposes under any circumstances. However, California Civil Code Section 1798.83 requires that all California residents be afforded the option to exercise their choice of whether Personal Information may be shared with third parties for direct marketing purposes or not, as well as to receive information specified in the statute if Personal Information is disclosed to third parties for direct marketing purposes. Accordingly, if you are a California resident and you wish to inform us whether you permit or refuse the sharing of your personal information with third parties for direct marketing purposes, or if you wish to request certain information if your personal information were to be disclosed to third parties for direct marketing purposes, please contact us.

Third-Party Services and Linked Websites

This Privacy Policy does not address, and we are not responsible for, the privacy, information, or other practices of any third parties, including any third party operating any site or service to which the Sites link. The inclusion of a link on the Sites does not imply endorsement of the linked site or service by us. In addition, we are not responsible for the information collection, use, disclosure, or security practices (including the data security practices) of other organizations, such as Facebook, Apple, Google, Microsoft, RIM, or any other app developer, app provider, social media platform provider, operating system provider, wireless service provider, or device manufacturer.

Changes to this Privacy Policy

STI may from time to time and at its discretion amend this Privacy Policy. The date at the top of this page indicates when this Privacy Policy was last revised. Any changes to this Privacy Policy will become effective when we post the revised Privacy Policy on the Sites. Your continued use of the Sites following these changes means that you accept the revised Privacy Policy.


STI is committed to ensuring that any personal information we collect is secure. We have procedures and technology in place to safeguard and secure the information we collect. All online donation transactions are encrypted using the Secure Socket Layers (SSL) protocol.  Such transactions are processed by Payment Card Industry (PCI)-compliant vendors, such as Stripe, and certain donation forms for charitable contributions are managed by STI’s 501(c)3 fiscal sponsor, The Ocean Foundation. Cross-Border Transfer

The Sites are controlled and operated by us from the United States and are not intended to subject us to the laws or jurisdiction of any state, country, or territory other than that of the United States. Your Personal Information may be stored and processed in any country where we have facilities or in which we engage service providers, and, by using the Sites, you consent to the transfer of information to countries outside of your country of residence, including the United States, which may have different data protection rules than those of your country.
